Untreated hearing loss<\/a> can negatively impact your health in a variety of ways. A recent study suggests it may increase the risk for post-surgical complications in older adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Researchers wanted to see whether older patients with hearing loss who underwent surgery were at a greater risk of postsurgical complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They examined health records of patients 65 and older who had undergone surgery between 2014 and 2017 and received an audiometric evaluation before the procedure. They found that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Though more research needs to be done, this finding is significant because millions of older adults currently have hearing loss. It\u2019s estimated that roughly one in three adults in the United States between the ages of 65 and 74 have hearing loss<\/a>. Additionally, nearly half of those older than 75 have difficulty hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Of the numerous older adults that have some degree of hearing loss, a significant amount do not use hearing aids, even though they would benefit from doing so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you\u2019re over the age of 60, take control of your hearing health by getting regular hearing tests<\/a> and being aware of the early signs of hearing loss.
